Praia de Quarteira is a beautiful, accessible beach and the main beach of this small town of Quarteira in the Algarve. It is very beautiful and well frequented by locals as well as tourists. Once a village of fishermen, Quarteira has become a lively resort town, and it forms the principal part of it. Golden sands and clear waters attract visitors to the beach.

Overview Praia de Quarteira

Praia de Quarteira

Measuring almost 2 kilometres, Praia de Quarteira has a beloved area to sunbathe, indulge in beach sports, and just unwind. The long stretch of the beach entices long walks, with soft sands lined with gentle waves that seem to draw the eye towards infinity, especially east towards Praia de Faro.

However, the soft and golden sand entices even the most discreet sun-seekers to immerse themselves in its warmth. Shutting high-rise apartments dot the perimeter of the beach; notwithstanding this urban setting, the beach remains well-kept and clean and will continue to be a wonderful place to hang out for families or for solitary travelers.

At this beach, the water is blue, almost transparent, and generally calm because of the stone breakwaters built parallel to the beach. This advantage enables one to swim along the shallow waters that gradually deepen as one goes farther out. Just be careful: the sea gets deep rapidly, hence the need for parents to keep their eyes on the small kids in the waterlogged areas.

Space to Enjoy

Praia de Quarteira

Praia de Quarteira is another giant hit for tourists from Portugal, especially in the summer. Even with so many people on the beach, you can always find a spot to set up your gear. If you prefer fewer crowds at the beach, visit just before or after the peak summer months: late spring or early autumn might be a better time.

It retains certain urban attributes but maintains an easy-going, very friendly atmosphere. Tourists and locals alike love the beach. Portuguese families flock to the beach and feel a strong sense of belonging because of the number of people who come back year after year. It has many people but is clean and welcoming, with attendants keeping things in order.

The Sections of Praia de Quarteira

One interesting thing about Praia de Quarteira is the fact that it is divided into six different sections, with each section having its name and character. These sections are

  • Praia da Rosa Branca

  • Praia Azul

  • Dom José Beach

  • Praia do Vidal

  • Praia JV

  • Praia da Gaivota

Though these sections go under their respective names, they all share the same continuous stretch of sand. Each section separated by stone breakwaters offers a slightly different variety of experiences. Some are loud and have sunbeds and beach bars, whereas others are calmer and ideal for a peaceful day of relaxation.

Promenade and Boardwalk

At the back of Praia de Quarteira runs an attractive boardwalk, Avenida Infante de Sagres, which runs the entire length of the beach. Palm tree-lined, this promenade is ideal for walking and biking, with breathtaking views of the beach and ocean.

The area is fantastic for a slow stroll, for people-watching, or for a refreshing drink at some of the many cafes that line the way. Later, when the sun is down, the promenade becomes very lively with street performers and live music, creating a relaxed atmosphere perfect for a sunset walk.

The area surrounding the boardwalk is full of restaurants, bars, and shops, making it an excellent spot to enjoy a meal or a drink after a day at the beach. An outdoor gym and a playground for kids are also available, so everything is catered for along this lovely stretch of coast.

The Fisherman Sculpture

A lovely sculpture called The Fisherman is by outstanding artist Jits Bakker. As you travel through the beachy surroundings here, we pay tribute to the fishermen who defined Quarteira's history. The artwork serves as an attractive reminder of the town's foundational roots, symbolising the stark charm of the area.
